Which part is it? Bumper, fender, reflector and trim names explained

Plain-English names for car body parts: bumper, bumper trim, fender, bonnet, tailgate, reflector, grille and more.

Why names matter

The same part can have several names. If you search or enquire with a name we also recognise, we can find it faster. Here are the common ones.

Bumper and bumper trim

The bumper is the large piece at the front or rear of the car. Bumper trim covers the strips, lip and garnish attached to or around it. People also say bumper lip or sticker bumper.

Rear reflector

A reflector is the red, lamp-like panel low on the rear bumper. It is not the tail lamp.

Fender and bonnet

The fender (also called the wing) is the panel beside the front wheel. The bonnet, called the hood in some countries, is the lid over the front of the car.

Tailgate

The tailgate is the rear lid of a hatchback or SUV. Some people say boot, trunk lid or liftgate.

Lamps

Headlamp or headlight is at the front. Tail lamp or taillight is at the rear, and some people also say brake light. A fog lamp is a small extra lamp, usually low at the front.

Mirror, grille and arch

The side mirror is also called a wing mirror. The grille is the vented panel at the front. The wheel arch lining is the liner inside the wheel arch.
